General Outline (2019)
Marimbist Nanae Mimura founded this marimba camp in 2015 to share her unique experiences as a professional marimba player. At each edition, we invite a different world-class marimbist, percussionist, or specialist from other fields (for example, a composer, Baroque music specialist, jazz player, etc.) as a guest faculty. "Together" we spend intense days satisfying our curiosity about marimba and music in general.
The camp offers group lessons, master classes, private lessons, ensembles, and several concerts, including an outreach concert, the participants’ finale concert and our faculty concert.
Message from Nanae
Welcome to the Yatsugatake Mountains! Kobuchizawa, an idyllic Japanese town of the Yamanashi region is located only 160 km northwest from Tokyo and is where I spent my childhood. The late summer weather is ideal and the natural setting is truly inspiring.
This annual, international 4-day marimba intensive camp began in 2015. Over the past four years, we have invited various world-renowned marimba virtuosos to join us as guest faculty members. This year I am thrilled to announce that Nancy Zeltsman, who has been leading the marimba world for the last several decades, will be our guest artist.
Over the past 20 years, I have performed and taught around the world and I have found that diversity is one of the most important factors in enriching our lives. During the camp, you will get the opportunity to learn from the faculty, as well as from the other students. Our approach is to create an open space that welcomes new ideas and participants’ own repertoire choices. We want you to feel motivated, challenged, and safe to take risks, so that you will grow through your marimba study at the Yatsugatake Marimba Camp. We hope that these rich experiences will open up many new doors for your life!
I am looking forward to meeting you in Yatsugatake in August 2019!
Nanae Mimura
